Fire razes eight heritage shop houses in George Town, blaze still ongoing


GEORGE TOWN: Eight double storey shophouses along Datuk Keramat Road here are ablaze as the fire and rescue department tries to do damage control as the fire spreads.

The department in a statement said so far the fire has caused 90% damage to the heritage shop houses.

"We were alerted of the fire at 8.04pm on Thursday (Sept 7).

"When we arrived at the scene it was found that there was a fire involving eight two storey shophouses.

"The fire extinguishing operation is being assisted by the nearby fire stations and volunteer fire units," the statement read on Thursday.

It said there were no victims involved.

From the various video footage being shared on social media, the fire looks to have razed an eatery and a motorcycle repair shop among others.
